1. Do I need to worry about bird flu if I use the chicken manure product.
No. First there has been no bird flu/human transferral in the USA. ("The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said that the strains found in the United States have never jumped to humans and pose zero health risk")
Second, this is what we have been told by the experts... "Avian flu needs a host to survive (i.e. a live bird). The manure is dehydrated and pasteurized. In that process (heating it up to 180-200 degrees...ouch that is hot!) would kill any if it still existed but it cannot even survive in the manure alone."
2. Is Cockadoodle DOO Super-Premium Organic Lawn & Garden Fertilizer totally safe for kids and pets?
Yes! Cockadoodle DOO Super-Premium Organic Lawn & Garden Fertilizer is absolutely safe for use around kids, pets, drinking water and the environment.
3. Can I use Cockadoodle DOO Super-Premium Organic Lawn & Garden Fertilizer on my lawn, flowers, vegetables, trees, bushes and roses?
Cockadoodle DOO Super-Premium Organic Lawn & Garden Fertilizer is great for anything that grows above the ground. Any blade grass, plant or tree that is nurtured with this product will reward you with great output for years to come.
5. What are "Natural Fertilizers" compared to "Organic" or "totally organic" fertilizers like Cockadoodle DOO Super-Premium Organic Lawn & Garden Fertilizer? Don't they also claim to be "safe for pets and kids?" Who should I believe?
Natural Fertilizers are NOT the same as Organic. Natural Fertilizers can not be called Organic! "Natural Fertilizers" are natural synthetics that include non-organic elements that are manufactured in order to increase the N-P-K. From a marketing standpoint, some manufacturers strive to make their N-P-K numbers look bigger than their competitors' numbers. This is often confusing to consumers trying to compare both products sitting side by side on the shelf in the garden center.
Cockadoodle DOO is the first and the original manufacturer to use the terminology "Safe for kids and pets" Therefore, if the label says "Cockadoodle DOO" you can be absolutely sure that the product is (1) organic and (2) totally safe for kids, pets, drinking water and the environment.
6. Do Organic Fertilizers work as well as chemical fertilizers?
Yes. Most people think they work even better overall. Chemicals are manufactured to increase, artificially, the nutrients that are found in lawns and plants. Organics, on the other hand, are a naturally occurring source of nutrients in a balanced natural way. Particularly over time Cockadoodle DOO Super-Premium Organic lawn and garden fertilizer will provide richer self-sustaining lawns and plants from the very top to the roots.
Within a short time, any hard-packed soil (previously treated with chemical synthetic steroid fertilizers) that has been treated with Cockadoodle DOO Super-Premium Organic Lawn & Garden Fertilizer will become 'soft' when you walk on it, and you will see signs of returning earth worms, which allow for better health of your plant and lawn root systems due to better drainage, more aeration, and a better natural irrigation environment. From the very first application of our Organic Fertilizer, your grass and plants will appear healthier and will be immune to diseases (e.g., fungicides from damp springs, blights from oppressive summer heat with little rain, and early frost damage during harsh winters).
7. What is the difference between Cockadoodle DOO Super-Premium Organic Lawn & Garden Fertilizer and other organic fertilizers such as composted cow manure and human sludge?
There are drastic differences between Cockadoodle DOO Super-Premium Organic Lawn & Garden Fertilizer and other organic fertilizers.
Cow manure is organic, but the less expensive versions are composted. Composting refers to a process of making piles of concentrated cow manure (or raw chicken manure) outdoors, then adding "drying agents" to the heap (grass, hay, straw, wood shavings, sawdust) in an effort to reduce the odor and acidity. However, the end product is very inconsistent. There are hot spots throughout the mixing process, so the product will be filled with weed seeds (horses and cows eat crab grass, dandelions and other weeds along with the grass, ingest it, and you then have fertilized weed seeds coming out the back end of the horse and/or cow. It is common to find an occasional cigarette butt, piece of Styrofoam or plastic wrapper in the composted end product as well.
Human sludge is a practical solution to dispose of the human waste stream. However, the coagulation process required to transform the sludge into granular form requires the use of heavy metals which do not break down in the soil. This has evoked grave concerns from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Federal Government. Also, the nutrient value of human sludge is vastly inferior to Cockadoodle DOO Super-Premium Organic Lawn & Garden Fertilizer's 4-2-3 guaranteed analysis.
8. What does Guaranteed Analysis (4-2-3) mean on the back of the bag? Why should I use Cockadoodle DOO Super-Premium Organic Lawn & Garden Fertilizer (N-P-K: 4-2-3) vs. a fertilizer a much higher N-P-K like a chemical fertilizer(N-P-K: 10-10-10)?
The guaranteed analysis is required by each state as well as the Federal Government. They indicate the minimum nutrient value (as a percent of total weight of the contents of the bag) of the 3 major elements (guaranteed by the manufacturer and listed on the bag) and allow for the listing of other minor elements as well.
The 3 major elements, the basic "N-P-K" nutrient value of the fertilizer, are as follows:
N (Nitrogen), P (Phosphate), K (Potassium). Each major element has its own growing characteristic consistent to all growing things. The combination of these three combined elements will affect aspects like the speed of growth, the size of flower blossoms, the shade of green, the strength of the stalk/vine, the amount of fruit it will bear, etc. However, the N-P-K guaranteed analysis does not indicate how long the effects of the N-P-K will last (10 days like chemicals with high synthetic/plastic coated numbers vs. 3 months for Cockadoodle DOO Super-Premium Organic Lawn & Garden Fertilizer.
9. When is the best time of year to use Cockadoodle DOO Super-Premium Organic Lawn & Garden Fertilizer?
Any season is a good time to use Cockadoodle DOO Super-Premium Organic Lawn & Garden Fertilizer! That is one of the best things about it…
In the Spring, use it to prepare flower beds, vegetable gardens, container pots on the patio/porch, window boxes, and apply to your lawn as well.
In the Summer, it is wonderful food for your lawn even on the hottest days when the grass root system is pale, laying dormant and screaming to be fed. Chemical fertilizers will burn your grass if applied this time of year. Also, the heavy feeders in your vegetable garden (e.g., tomatoes, peppers, zucchini, squash, pumpkins, soft melons, blueberries/strawberries, and anything growing on a vine) should be fed every 2 to 3 weeks for maximum output.
In the Fall, apply it to your lawn in late October/early November as your grass root system will continue to grow and thicken up until the dead of winter sets in. This is also a great time to use our Organic Fertilizer to prepare your flower beds and vegetable garden for winter. It will break down into the soil, lay dormant, and provide an excellent balanced meal for your plants and lawn root system when the first rays of spring warmth hit them.
In the winter, use it on your houseplants to keep them healthy.
10. How do I apply Cockadoodle DOO Super-Premium Organic Lawn & Garden Fertilizer? How do I know how much to use? What type of spreader and setting do you recommend?
When applying by hand directly to the specific kind of plant, rose, bush, or tree, follow the instructions on the back of the bag for application rates.
When fertilizing large square footage areas like vegetable gardens or lawns, each bag is marked with the square footage (20-lb bag covers 1,250 square feet, 40-lb bag covers 2,500 square feet). While a normal drop spreader can be used, we do not recommend it. This is because, in the wet spring, the grass tends to be long and extends up into the throat of the drop spreader, softening the granules and making the flow less consistent as they drop out.
We recommend using any generic rotary/circular spreader with the throat opening WIDE OPEN. This is a fast and easy way to get your coverage down in a consistent manner without worrying about pale spots (where you missed with the drop spreader), or using string or hose markers to stay "on line". Just fill up the rotary spreader, pull the lever, and start walking fast for exercise. You can fertilize in 5- to 6-foot swathes without worrying about burning or overlapping. For more information view our Application Process page.
11. How long does it take the pellets to disappear into the soil? How long will the nutrients release into the soil and around the roots of the plants or lawn? How long is the effective feeding time?
The pellets will disappear after a good solid rain storm. They will feed the root base of plants or lawn on a consistent, even-feed basis for 90 days at the guaranteed analysis rate of 4-2-3 (N-P-K).
12. What are trace elements and why are they important?
Trace elements are minor elements that are beneficial to root systems that have been sterilized by the use of harmful chemical fertilizers. Calcium is one extremely important trace element that is crucial for the healthy growth and development of the plant or blade of grass (see immediately below). Carbon is another. And the list goes on and on.
13. What is the significance of 3% Calcium?
Calcium is a great healer and plant antibiotic to help ward off diseases such as fungicides and blights. Tomatoes love soil with a high concentration of calcium. Tomato plants that are grown in such soil will seldom yield sickly fruit with black spots. Cockadoodle DOO Super-Premium Organic Lawn & Garden Fertilizer's calcium content is quite remarkable. In fact, no other fertilizer can boast this feature.
The finest groomed golf courses on which you see the major PGA & LPGA tournaments played use high percentages of calcium on the areas of the course that take the highest amount of abuse and stress (e.g., greens and tee boxes, which get heavy amounts of water and are cut down close to the heart of the grass root twice a day during peak growing times).
14. How does Cockadoodle DOO Super-Premium Organic Lawn & Garden Fertilizer benefit the soil and plant root system?
The calcium maintains a consistent healthy pH in the root system (much like a healthy heart rate and blood pressure in healthy human beings who get regular exercise and eat the right foods). The dehydration process that our Organic Fertilizer endures leaves a high carbon content which is extremely beneficial to the soil and the root system. Carbon does for soil what gypsum does for clay, in that the carbon opens the soil, bringing back organisms such as worms and ants, allowing for better drainage and irrigation, and preventing drainage blocks that create fungicide problems.
15. Will Cockadoodle DOO burn my grass and plants?
NO. Cockadoodle DOO Super-Premium Organic Lawn & Garden Fertilizer has been sterilized and dehydrated in large industrial kilns for successive periods of time at extreme temperatures so that all harmful nitrates, pathogens and bacteria are extracted. The final product has virtually no odor in its kiln-dried granular state and will not burn grass or plants. In fact, the product is so gentle that application is recommended while planting grass seed or seedlings of any kind. Our Organic Lawn & Garden Fertilizer offers the young seedlings an excellent food source for rapid growth as well as tremendous strength to the stalks and soon-to-be fruit bearing vines.
16. I've heard that organic and natural fertilizers have a horrible smell. Is this true?
Cockadoodle DOO Super-Premium Organic Lawn & Garden Fertilizer has virtually no odor. The product has been baked and sterilized for successive periods of time and is nearly 90% dry when you apply it. The small granular size allows it to break down very quickly in a good rain storm or sprinkling with the hose. The best time to apply it is just before a good rain storm (it takes about 30 minutes to cover about 5,000 square feet, the average lot size across the USA) Once the small granular formulation has broken down into the soil, there is literally no odor, even to the most sensitive nose. The stuff that smells is composted or raw.
17. Cockadoodle DOO Super-Premium Organic Lawn & Garden Fertilizer seems very expensive compared to chemical fertilizers. Why is that?
At a glance, this would appear to be true. A 40-lb bag of Cockadoodle DOO Super-Premium Organic Lawn & Garden Fertilizer that costs (suggested retail) $29.95 at professional independent garden centers seems expensive when compared to much cheaper chemicals that sell for under $10.00 at hardware stores.
Here's the difference: just a little bit of Cockadoodle DOO goes a long way! It continuously feeds your grass and plants for up to 90 days, delivering an even-balanced and nutritional feed while replacing the organic micro organisms instantly back into the soil. Chemical fertilizers only feed for 10 to 14 days on average, while sterilizing and robbing the soil of all the natural trace elements and micro organisms. You will have to buy MORE bags of the chemical fertilizer to have the same 90 days of effect Cockadoodle DOO provides.
18. Aren't the chickens inoculated with steroids and fed hormones to fatten them up faster? Isn't that going to effect the fertilizer?
No. The chickens used for Cockadoodle DOO Super-Premium Organic Lawn & Garden Fertilizer are NOT fed hormones or inoculated with steroids. They are fed a high-protein diet and allowed to eat as much as they'd like. The diet is healthy and consistent.
19. I've noticed in the past when using cow manure and other composted fertilizers that I end up with more weeds than plants. Will I have a real mess of weeds in my lawn and garden if I use Cockadoodle DOO?
We are very sensitive about not having weeds in our fertilizer. We dehydrate our product at high temperatures to make sure we have no weed seeds present in Cockadoodle DOO Super-Premium Organic Lawn & Garden Fertilizer. Other products like composted cow manure and air dried and/or composted chicken manure products are inconsistent and loaded with weed seeds.
20. How long after putting down Cockadoodle DOO Super-Premium Organic Weed Control can I plant new grass seed?
In general 4-5 weeks.
21. Why apply Cockadoodle DOO Super-Premium Organic Weed Control before the forsythia blooms?
Crabgrass and chickweed, a nuisance to lawn care enthusiasts, germinate when the soil temperature at 4" stabilizes at 55°F. This specific soil temperature triggers both the germination of cool season weed season and the forsythia bloom. This is important to know if you plan to apply a pre-emergent herbicide to prevent cool season weed seed (crabgrass and chickweed) from germinating. Too early or late an application will miss the window of opportunity and you’re left to your own devices to control these weeds!
